Newswire Masthead (General Information)

Welcome to the July 1993 edition of Tandem Toastmasters Newswire, the on-line newsletter of the Tandem Toastmasters club. This newswire is intended to inform and inspire both club members and potential club members.

If you are an "inspired" nonmember and would like to experience a Tandem Toastmasters meeting firsthand, please come to a meeting -- as often as you want -- as a guest. We will ask you to introduce yourself and ask for your comments at the end of the meeting. We might invite you to participate in Table Topics (the impromptu part of our meeting). We will not pressure you to participate or to join the club.

Tandem Toastmasters meets Wednesdays, NOON to 1:00 PM, in room 2004 of building 201. Building 201 is at 10501 North Tantau Ave. (between Pruneridge Rd. and Vallco Parkway). Room 2004 is upstairs in the main hall -- look for the sign that says "Tandem Toastmasters meets here." Watch third class mail for our weekly agendas (but note that they are subject to change).

Tandem Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International. In the Toastmasters International organization, Tandem Toastmasters is club #4658, in Area 6, Division G, District 4, and Region 2.

Mark Bergman's Quality Week Speech

(from Mark's June 1 e-mail message to us)

The speech went very well. I had ~200 people listen for 90 minutes. The questions were good and the audience (for the most part) was involved. I felt the speech did better than I expected. Mixing "real life" examples with theories in a logical order works well for these types of speeches. The hardest thing I had to do was narrow down my material so it could be presented in time and still make sense. Even 90 minutes can be way too short for some subjects or for going into too much detail. I have found that practice is the only way to find the best balance (as well as talking to other speakers who have done this for a while). All in all, I enjoyed myself, and I look forward to doing it again, when I get the chance. Note: If you have some good ideas and some "real life" practices to back the ideas up, write them all up and submit a paper to a conference. That is how you get the chance to do these speeches. Also, conferences are always looking for more good speakers! If you have any questions about how to go about doing this, please let me know.

Cyndi Chin-Lee's Speech to American Business Women's Association

(from Joy-Ellen Lipsky's June 17 third-class e-mail messageand Cyndi's e-mail comments about it)

From Joy-Ellen's message:

The Los Gatos Charter Chapter of the American Business Women's Association wishes to thank and congratulate Cyndi Chin-Lee for her very successful talk at the June 16th Business Associate and Scholarship event. Cyndi's talk on "Self-Fulfilling Prophecy" was instructive as well as entertaining. Thanks again, Cyndi, for making our evening entertaining, insightful, and enjoyable ...

The mission of the American Business Women's Association (ABWA) is to bring together women (and men) of diverse backgrounds, and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support, and national recognition. If you are interested in learning more about ABWA, reply to this e-mail* or phone Joy-Ellen Lipsky at (408) 285-8048.

* If you didn't save Joy-Ellen's message and want to reach her by e-mail, address your message to LIPSKY_JOY-ELLEN.

From Cyndi's e-mail message about this speech:

I actually expanded a speech I gave at TM a few years ago from the 5-7 minute format to about 20-25 minutes. Sandy Allen came with a guest. It was great to see her there. I'm happy to share my notes and thoughts if desired. By the way, it was the same speech I used to represent the club at the area contest (International speech) a few years ago.

Ray Glasstone's New Baby

(Ray's July 7 e-mail message)

Hi Folks,

As you may already know Carol gave birth to a 10lb baby boy on Tuesday morning. Mother and baby are both doing great and are planning on coming home from the hospital this afternoon. Father is still smiling from ear to ear! I will be taking next week off work to read the manuals and to learn the operating procedures!

Matthew Ronald, says that if you are in town, please drop by to say hi! His phone number is [deleted].

Ray

I'd like to hear more from Robin or Ray G about growing up or being eddicated in England -- mostly because it's my favorite place!

Mark Bergman said:

Hi Sheila. Somehow I knew it would be dangerous bumping you up at a higher officer position :-). [Editor's note: I should've known it'd be dangerous to ask Mark a question like this! :-) ]

Coming to a Toastmasters Club near you! 30 topics of great interest:

As for who should do the speeches, I will leave that exercise up to the reader(s) of this list.

Betty Snedaker said:

I would like to hear Jeff Mann give a speech about his cab driving days in San Francisco -- I bet he has interesting and amusing stories of places he has been and passengers he has picked up.

Cyndi Chin-Lee "seconded the notion:"

Tough question! I'd like a speech about "Being a cabbie" or "my funniest moments as a cabbie" by Jeff Mann.

Jeff, it sounds like you have a Manndate.

Ann Hsu said:

I would like to hear about "Unconventional Lifestyles" from anyone who has one and "The Toils and Rewards of Raising Kids," from someone who has kids. Oh, yes, how about "Different Government Models in the World -- Socialist, Republic, Democratic, Federalist, Communist, etc." With our ever changing world, what do these terms mean? Maybe I'll do this one myself.

Tom Lawson said:

I'd like to hear Bob May give a speech comparing George Bush's aversion to broccoli with Bill Clinton's aversion to Flowers.
