Welcome to the November 1993 edition of Tandem Toastmasters Newswire, the on-line newsletter of the Tandem Toastmasters club. This newswire is intended to inform and inspire both club members and potential club members.
If you are an "inspired" nonmember and would like to experience a Tandem Toastmasters meeting firsthand, please come to a meeting -- as often as you want -- as a guest. We will ask you to introduce yourself and ask for your comments at the end of the meeting. We might invite you to participate in Table Topics (the impromptu part of our meeting). We will not pressure you to participate or to join the club.
Tandem Toastmasters meets Wednesdays, NOON to 1:00 PM, in room 2004 of building 201. Building 201 is at 10501 North Tantau Ave. (between Pruneridge Rd. and Vallco Parkway). Room 2004 is upstairs in the main hall -- look for the sign that says "Tandem Toastmasters meets here." Watch third class mail for our weekly agendas (but note that they are subject to change).
Tandem Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International. In the Toastmasters International organization, Tandem Toastmasters is club #4658, in Area 6, Division G, District 4, and Region 2.

The District 4 conference on November 12 and 13 included an Interpretive Reading Contest, an Evaluation Contest, and a Humorous Speech Contest. I was only able to attend the Humorous Speech Contest.
In my far-from-humble opinion, this District Humorous Speech Contest was not as good as our October '93 Division Humorous Speech Contest. It started an hour late. The Toastmaster mispronounced several speakers' names, misread the title of one speech, neglected to mention the contestants' divisions and clubs, and subjected us to pun-ishment that made Robin and me look downright clever. I thought that two of the speakers were very weak, that all of our Division contestants were better. Heck, I thought the second place winner of our Area contest was better! I guess our Division just has most of the talent in the District :-) (Hey, I warned you my opinion wasn't humble!) For a complete report on the contest, netview \PRUNE.$FACE.TM.CON1193.
The next District 4 conference will be May 13-14, 1994, in San Francisco. Its theme is "Develop Your Dreams." Division E is sponsoring it. The chairperson is Janice Holm, whose number is 510-839-3531.
Our December 8 meeting will be devoted to the election of next term's board. Each candidate will be nominated (with a short, probably humorous speech) by another club member, the members at the meeting will vote, and the winners will give acceptance speeches (also short and probably humorous). The candidates so far are:
| President | Ann Hsu |
| Immediate Past President | Jeff Mann |
| Vice President of Education | Tom Lawson |
| Vice President of Membership | Open |
| Vice President of Public Relations | Sheila Moore |
| Secretary | Sandy Allen |
| Treasurer | Anup Pandey |
| Sergeant at Arms | Open |
If you would like to run for an office -- especially Vice President of Membership or Sergeant at Arms, please contact Ray Glasstone, the Toastmaster for the December 8 meeting.
On Tuesday, December 14, Point of Order Toastmasters club is hosting a special holiday meeting at Charlie Brown's Restaurant in San Mateo, "Featuring Table Topics, Fun and Frolic, [and] Good Company." If you would like to attend, RSVP to Susan Swope (Point of Order Secretary) at her office (415-859-3394) or home (415-859-3110). Charlie Brown's Restaurant is just off Highway 92 and West Hillsdale Blvd.
Early registration is critical!
The 1994 Region II Conference will be June 24-25 at the Sheraton Los Angeles Airport Hotel. Early registration is critical because World Cup Soccer will be in L.A. at the same time and accommodations will be in short supply. You MUST register by May 31, 1994, but you can register now. Pick up an application at a club meeting or ask Sheila Moore for one.
Gary Staas, the TM alumnus who won the prize for traveling furthest to Homecoming Day, rejoined our club. Gary lives in Scotts Valley with his wife and several cats.
Ratan Tipirneni, a new member, works in the Storage Group of OEM Development in building 100. He enjoys basketball, hiking, and reading. Lately he has been reading about Eastern Philosophy and Business.

One of the best special meetings/events we have ever had! I liked everything about it -- the clever award categories were special.
I think Sandy and Mike deserve a hand (clap clap clap) for the excellent quality of the meeting.
Mike Skarpelos said:
Hi Sheila,
As you already know, I love reunions of all kinds. Getting to see Angel, Gary, Dave, Jeff and the other alums who attended was a real joy for me. I hope we can do this every year.
Ray Glasstone said:
Meeting post toasties again.

Awards.... and table topics..
Bryan Bajema said:
What I liked most was probably meeting many of the former Toastmasters and being reminded of the support, warmth and enthusiasm they showed when I was starting as a club member.
Sandy Allen said:
I like planning events like this! It is so rewarding to visualize the whole event (with a few things left to chance, like the King and Queen ) and seeing it open up before our very eyes! Maybe in my next career I will plan Homecoming events!
Regards, Sandy Thanks again for all your help with lists!
Tom Lawson said:
I like seeing all my old friends!
Robin Maybury said:
I liked the display of warmth and friendship combined with the joy of seeing some of our previous members. Somewhat of a bittersweet experience when we reflect that some of them were laid off from Tandem. It was good to welcome them back and have a chance to share how much we all have benefitted from Tandem Toastmasters. I also enjoyed the generosity and encouragement of Jeff's super speech.
Jo Ann Cobb said:
I really enjoyed meeting and talking to previous members, like Angel and Dave, whose names I had seen and always wondered who they were!
Tom Lawson was a guest Evaluator at the Orbiters club and won the ribbon for Best Evaluator. It really was "Best" rather than "Better" Evaluator, too, because there were three Evaluators instead of the usual two.

HELP WANTED!
Area D-5 GovernorYou DO NOT need to be in D-5 or even in Division "D" to serve. Part of being an effective communicator is being a leader. If you look at the Basic Manual, it says, "Communication and Leadership."
I know many of you are good leaders and would make a good Area Governor. Please help me out by lending your talent and skills.
